How to choose a hotel in Los Angeles and which LA area is the best to live in

Hotels in Los Angeles are a very important part of almost any trip to the West Coast of the United States, in the state of California.

In this article I will tell you about all the options for accommodation in Los Angeles, introduce you to tourist reviews and recommend the best hotels, and you can easily determine where you will be more comfortable to stay and spend the night.

Los Angeles Hotels

There are quite a few hotels in Los Angeles, more than a thousand different options.

Los Angeles is a very large city, and traveling from one area to another often takes a lot of time. When choosing lodging in Los Angeles, I advise you to consider the purpose of your trip and consider hotels in the priority areas for you. It is quite easy to do this, unlike looking for hotels in San Francisco.

It is very important to check that your hotel or apartment is close to a subway station, especially if you are not going to rent a car and drive around the city. If you are traveling in the United States by car, however, when choosing a hotel in Los Angeles, I advise you to pay attention to the availability of free parking next to it. In some hotels in the city center and in popular tourist areas you need to pay for a place for the car separately (20-30 dollars per day).

How to choose a hotel in Los Angeles

So where should you stay in L.A. – in a house, an apartment, a hotel, or a hostel, and in which neighborhoods, other than Hollywood, should you rent a room or apartment on the beach?

Here’s a quick guide to choosing accommodations in Los Angeles:

Determine the purpose of your trip: sightseeing, fun with the kids, business trip, attending a parade, attending a sporting event, a shopping trip, or a beach vacation. It is best to book a hotel in Los Angeles where you can rest comfortably before or after your flight without having to worry about your safety.

How long do you plan to stay in the city? If you’re only coming for a couple of days, it’s best to settle close to where your main interests are. For example, in Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice, Downtown, Manhattan Beach or Malibu so you don’t have to take an expensive cab or rent a car.

▶Or maybe you plan to rent a car right at the airport, get some rest, and then go sightseeing in California? Then you are better off looking for a hotel closer to the airport with free shuttle service (like the Hyatt Place LAX) or at the exit of the city.

For an extended stay in Los Angeles, it is better to book a comfortable hotel in a quiet area, but with good transport accessibility, or rent an apartment. It is considered that a standard hotel room is suitable for a short stay (from 1 to 5 days), and if you plan to stay for a longer period, it is better to choose a comfortable suite, such as a comfortable Residence Inn with a pool, its own kitchen and living room, or rent an apartment (so will be cheaper and more comfortable).

Determine your living budget. Housing in Los Angeles is very diverse, and prices vary enormously. Hotels in expensive areas (Downtown, Beverly Hills, Pasadena) can cost 2-3 times more expensive than those in less popular or far from the center and beaches (Glendale, Inglewood, Gardenina).

Look at which area of Los Angeles would be most convenient for you to live in so that you don’t have to spend a lot of time traveling around the city by transport.

Choose the type of housing that’s right for you. For example, in the most popular Hollywood area, a luxury hotel or a simpler hotel room is best for a couple, but for a group of friends, it makes more sense to rent an apartment or rent an apartment. Young people travelling alone tend to settle in budget hostels like the Banana Bungalow in the Hollywood area.

Useful tip: If you are going to see the main attractions in the city and then drive along the Pacific coast to San Francisco, or fly to Las Vegas for a vacation, a tour of the Grand Canyon Park, or the national parks of the USA, you can stay downtown first and then move to another hotel closer to the airport or Union Station.

Once you’ve learned about all the ways to stay in Los Angeles, choose the one that’s right for you!

Which Los Angeles hotel to choose

After our trip to the West Coast of the United States, we are often asked to recommend the best hotels in Los Angeles with high ratings and good reviews where to stay for a few days. Since it is really not easy to understand all the variety of accommodations, I decided to share with you where it is best to book a good hotel in Los Angeles and how to rent an apartment to live close to the interesting sights and to be comfortable at the same time.

For shopping and partying

If you come to L.A. to shop for trendy clothes or just to hang out, it is better to settle in the area of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, or in Santa Monica. Prices start at $105 (like the cheapest Hotel del Flores). Room rates at decent hotels in Beverly Hills are quite high – from $ 200 (Hotel Beverly Terrace 3 *). Although in Santa Monica and neighboring Venice are budget options from $ 65, but they are not many.

Near the sights of Hollywood

Those who want to see the main attractions of Los Angeles choose hotels in Hollywood. Book them in advance, as the best options sell out very quickly.

We came to Los Angeles by car ourselves after a trip down the Pacific Coast Highway, so we chose a hotel in Hollywood with free parking – La Brea Inn. It’s right on Hollywood Boulevard and only costs about $100 a night. Overall, we liked it – the room was large and clean, with good soundproofing, and it was literally a 3 minute walk to the Chinese Theater! There was even a small breakfast with coffee and cupcakes in the morning.

Prices for affordable 3-star hotels in Hollywood range from $100 to $200 (e.g. Holiday Inn Hollywood Walk of Fame), Comfortable 4-star will cost at least $250 US per night (The Hollywood Roosevelt).

For Business People

Those who come to Los Angeles on business or for a conference usually choose a downtown (Downtown) hotel, like the Residence Inn by Marriott for $300. From here begins all the ways of the United States in the direction of the South-Western California – from the Union Station and the many bus stations around it. Hotel room rates start at $120 (Metro Plaza Hotel), and you’ll have to pay twice as much for the comfortable 3* options (Best Western Plus Dragon Gate Inn).

Inexpensive options near Hollywood

Quite a few hotels at low prices can be found in the Westside and Koreatown neighborhoods, where budget travelers tend to live. Keep in mind that if your hotel is far from a subway station, it will not be very convenient for you, because buses in Los Angeles do not go very often and not on all streets. But the choice of lodging and accommodation options in Westside is the greatest, ranging from $50 a night (like the King’s Lodge Motel) to the more comfortable 4-star InterContinental Hotel and the luxurious 5-star Plaza la Reina.

For a beach vacation

For a beach vacation, it’s best to choose areas along the Pacific Coast. The most prestigious of these is the Malibu area. There are almost no hotels, as the rich prefer to rent a house or villa there, but a small selection available (The M Malibu 3 *, prices from $ 150).

Then there are the Santa Monica, Venice, and Marina del Rey neighborhoods, which are good for relaxing on the coast with the refreshing air and small excursions into the city center. There are a lot of hotels there, literally for every taste and wallet (room rates per night from $70 – Samesun Venice Beach). However, for a trip in the summer period they should be booked several months in advance because of the very high demand.

Hotels in Disneyland

There is no doubt that when you come to Los Angeles, most tourists with children will go to Disneyland. It is located in Anaheim and there are plenty of hotels there as well. For the best resorts in Disneyland you have to pay at least $ 150-200 per night (Residence Inn by Marriott 3*). Keep in mind that the best way to get to Anaheim is to take a special bus directly from the Los Angeles Airport (LAX) right after your arrival, as it takes passengers to their hotels.

The Beverly Hills Hotel, a suburban 5 star hotel built in 1912 in Renaissance style is located on Sunset Boulevard (across the street from William Rogers Park) and became world famous because it was home to Hollywood stars, actors and celebrities. Hotel Facts of Interest: Since the heyday of Hollywood, the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel has housed 208 luxury rooms in the main building and 23 bungalows in the grounds, all decorated in peach-pink and green tones. These colors are still the hallmark of the Beverly Hills Hotel, which also made it known as the Pink Palace.

The Beverly Hills Hotel has the most famous restaurant in Los Angeles, the Polo Lounge, which for years has been the best place to meet influential people for lunch. World movie stars are often seen here.

Hotel Chateau Marmont 5* – rating 8.8

Chateau Marmont is the most famous historical 5 star hotel in Hollywood, built in 1929 in the image of the royal residence Château d’Amboise (Chateau Amboise) in the French Loire Valley. Today it is the best example of a building in Los Angeles with original vintage interiors in a retro force, towering in the middle of a tropical garden in Los Angeles’ most famous neighborhood on popular Sunset Boulevard, in the center of glamour and luxury.

The size of the Chateau Marmont Hotel is not very large, with only 63 rooms of two types – room type and suite – and there are several luxurious garden bungalows. Each Chateau Marmont room is a cozy home, with everything you need in the equipped private kitchens and living rooms. The most spacious and expensive rooms have private dining rooms, balconies and cozy terraces. In the courtyard of the hotel there is a stylish swimming pool with heated water.

The hotel’s wonderful Marmont restaurant is open around the clock. It is one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles serving the freshest California and European cuisine. The guests can choose a table indoors or outdoors or order any dish from the menu to their room.

Where to book a hotel in Los Angeles

In addition to the popular Bucking.com, we also used Airbnb, a well-known travel site we use a lot, and the handy aggregator Hotellook.com, which has a larger selection of options.

Renting a place on Airbnb

For starters, let me briefly tell people who don’t know about Airbnb and how it works. Locals in Los Angeles (as well as others around the world) offer their homes (houses, apartments, and rooms) for rent directly on Airbnb. In this case, the site serves as a third party, guaranteeing the safety of the transaction for travelers and apartment owners. We ourselves have found many times on Airbnb good accommodation at a low price and have always been satisfied.

So, on the site Airbnb is very easy to find a suitable accommodation depending on the format of the trip:

  • a room in a house or apartment (separate or shared);
  • Apartment / condo / house as a whole (a choice of the number of rooms or beds you need);
  • a hotel room.

As you can see, with the help of Airbnb you can rent not only a house or apartment in Los Angeles, but also a hotel room. For tourists it is convenient because the price can be lower than on the official website of the hotel or on Bookings. We, for example, were quite satisfied with the fact that on Airbnb there was more choice in the Inglewood area, which was convenient for us for accommodation in L.A.

Finding hotels on Hotellook

I have more good news for those who want to make their own hotel reservations in Los Angeles. On HotelLook.ru you can find hotels that are not on Bookings, or catch lower rates. We often use it ourselves when we want to find alternative accommodation and it has never failed us. It’s easy to filter by comfort level, neighborhood, distance from the city center, and guest reviews.

What else you should know about accommodations in Los Angeles

Besides traditional lodging in pre-booked hotels, apartments, and hostels, there are some less popular and lesser-known options for travelers to stay in Los Angeles, such as couchsurfing, campgrounds, and Priceline hotel searches. Let me tell you more about them.

Priceline

When we traveled around the U.S., we sometimes slept in hotels that we hadn’t booked in advance. That’s usually how it works. We accessed the internet in the afternoon, went to Priceline.com, and in about 15 minutes found a good deal on a hotel nearby. Then we paid for the reservation with our bank card online and went to check in at the given address. As a result, we saved quite a bit of money, as we ended up at a very nice hotel with 2 to 3 stars for very little money. So now we recommend everyone, who does not know yet, to use the Priceline system when traveling in the USA.

Couchsurfing

The most frugal travelers can use the couchsurfing service and fit in with locals for free. This accommodation option has its obvious advantages (no need to spend money for lodging) and disadvantages (you will have to adjust to the lifestyle of strangers). Couchsurfing is most convenient in the case when you don’t have extra money, or there are no suitable hotels or other accommodation options in the area you are interested in.

Campgrounds

A great opportunity for all lovers of camping outdoors is also available in Los Angeles. It’s worth bearing in mind that the parks and woods surrounding the bustling city have many equipped campgrounds where you can stay and spend the night. Recreation.gov has all the outdoor recreation options, and it’s pretty easy to find your nearest campground right on a map. This site can also come in handy for finding lodging near the Grand Canyon, where it’s all very expensive.

I should note that the option of camping accommodations in California assumes that you have your own car or have rented one to make the trip around California. It will be quite difficult to get to the country parks without a car, but you can still get to some of them by bus. In addition, the suburbs of Riverside, San Bernardino, and the Pacific Coast near Malibu also have campgrounds and trailer parks where you’re allowed to camp overnight.
