Stanford University (USA) – detailed description, address, opening hours, how to get there. Information about educational programs and courses, reviews.
Anyone for whom words like Hewlett-Packard, Electronic Arts, Sun Microsystems, Yahoo! and Google, is not an empty phrase, of course, the place with which the emergence of these world-famous companies is associated – Stanford University, or the University. Leland Stanford Jr. (this is the full title), or Stanford for short. It was at Stanford University that all of the above and many other companies and corporations worth millions of dollars were born. And it is Stanford University, located in the very center of Silicon Valley, and therefore in the “epicenter” of the most progressive cutting-edge research, that occupies the second position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
Each year, Stanford University admits approximately 6,700 undergraduate and 8,000 graduate students from the United States and around the world.
Founded in 1891 by railroad tycoon, U.S. Senator and former California Governor Leland Stanford and his wife Jane Stanford, Stanford University was named after Leland Stanford Jr.’s only son, who died as a young man, at a cost of $ 15 million. The Stanfords decided to dedicate the university to their only son, and Leland told his wife: “The children of California will be our children.”
At the same time, Stanford’s motto was the words from Ulrich von Gutten “Die Luft der Freiheit weht” – “The wind of freedom blows.”
And the wind really blows, and Stanford today has become the largest education center in the entire Asia-Pacific region. That is why the Stanfords have acquired not only the “children of California”, but also Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and Oceania.
Today Stanford has become a place where cutting-edge research is conducted in genetics, cultural anthropology, neuroeconomics.
What to watch
Compatriots who have visited Stanford University often share their impressions of the peculiarities of Stanford’s architecture and design – even through this, the desire for innovation, pragmatism, thoughtfulness and clarity can be seen.
The campus of the university is located on a plain between the hills, far from the noisy and cramped streets of the city. The site was designed by landscape designer Frederick Lo Olmsted, who created the famous New York City Central Park. The design of the building masterfully intertwines the neo-Romanesque style and the Californian style of the Catholic missions. In the central part of the campus, several squares are combined with the courtyard of the Main Quad into one large, and a church decorated with mosaics becomes a bright chord of the ensemble. You look at all this and you will understand – here it is, harmony. A combination of colors, shapes and materials, carefully blended into the world of sun, flowers, palms and squirrels, which seem to be deliberately launched into the territory to complement this stunning style.

Names
At Stanford University, special attention is paid to the humanities and medical sciences, and with the money raised from the lease of Silicon Valley lands, the university was able to create many scientific research laboratories, as well as an alliance of technical companies. Therefore, today Stanford is the place where cutting-edge research in genetics, cultural anthropology, neuroeconomics and many other areas of science is conducted.
Stanford has given the world several Nobel Prize winners. Among the renowned alumni of the university are scientists and businessmen – the founders of Cisco Systems – Len Bosak and Sandy Lerner, an expert in the field of artificial intelligence John McCarthy, the founders of Google – Sergey Brin and Larry Page, famous politicians – the 31st American President Herbert Hoover, the well-known Condoleezza Rice (she was once the vice-chancellor of Stanford), actors, athletes, doctors, writers. After leaving the alma mater, Stanford graduates return here as teachers, lecturers or just guests. The key word is return.
